Improper repairs over the years, including repointing with hard cement mortar, covering the wall with synthetic stucco, and caulking the joint between the steel lintel and the masonry, trapped moisture inside the wall. This led to rusting of the lintel and deterioration of the brick. To resolve these issues, the lintel was replaced with a new steel one, and the exterior wythe of the brick was rebuilt with salvaged common brick and lime-based mortar.
